CEO
Not for Profit Community Sector Organisation.
Our organisation had been run for 15 years by the original founder and CEO. When she left and the Board had to install a new CEO, all hell broke loose. Naomi was brought in to resolve the standoff and support me, the new CEO in building a new culture.
She helped people to leave if they needed to leave, and she also helped me to look at the things I was doing that were not helping the situation! The whole thing could have gone so terrible wrong and it didn’t. Instead the organisation went on in leaps and bounds because the really difficult issues were dealt with. Naomi worked with both me and the staff in helping manage this difficult transition and creating the groundwork for a new and dynamic organisation.
It took someone like Naomi who is both supportive and uncompromising in her honesty to work through this change; that’s what’s unique about Naomi, she helped us all to do the hard stuff. As a CEO I got the counsel and support I needed, and as a staff group we were able to become engaged and focused. As a result we were all able to move on in a positive way that gave more people the opportunity to do things they’d never been able to do before.

I now have more authority to influence and change the business for the better. I don’t feel like I’m a token person on the Senior Management team anymore. There is an improved focus on HR at the senior level. The way HR engages with the business units is different and much improved – there is a strengthened relationship between HR staff and middle management with a more consultative way of working. The HR profile has changed. “Working with Integrity” has replaced the barrier of “Confidentiality”

Naomi was different from other consultants. There was no sales push or pressure. She was real, honest and genuine. She provides great insight and understanding of organisational life and relationships. The CEO and executive team have all had the opportunity to talk about their relationships with each other in a way they hadn’t previously. The consultancy program has provided that space. Communication is now more open and there is an opportunity to have dialogue around relationships, not just the content. This work has opened up so many possibilities and new ways of doing things. Changing behavior, habits and attitudes is challenging work and it takes time. The work has removed barriers and revealed the parallels between personal and organisational life.

"Working with Naomi has helped us mature as an organisation and become one that has begun to understand itself – not just at Leadership Team level but throughout the school. This has meant that a shared language and culture has been able to develop around the way managers confront and tackle issues they would have been reluctant to do otherwise. The organisational dynamic is healthier and more outward looking. In particular, the way some long standing conflict has been dealt with has resulted in relationships healing rather than breaking. We would not have got to where we are now had it not been for working with her."

From the moment I met Naomi, I felt an immediate rapport with her and so began our relationship. She creates a safe environment where I am able to open up, talk freely and process my thoughts, fears and emotions. Naomi has provided enormous support to me and enhanced my development in both my personal and professional life. With the help of Naomi, I have learnt so much about myself and also my interactions and relationships with others.

With regard to the group coaching experience I had with Naomi, I would describe it as talking about work and learning about oneself. Everything is on the table, both personal and work-related and the learning is in seeing how it is all connected. I think it takes our life at work to another dimension because so many things at work are usually off-limits. It's not easy. It's not about being touchy-feely. It's about challenging ourselves to be the best we can be. And it's about articulating what work is in ways that we don't usually think about. I've been challenged to think about what type of leader I am, what type of colleague I am, what being a professional is, and in what ways I have and exercise authority. Mostly, it's about not avoiding the hard stuff. We tend to think of professional learning as something directly related to the knowledge-base of our job. This is professional learning unlike any I have experienced. Professional learning is personal learning - we bring the person we are to the work we do. I can't wait to get there each session to see what will be revealed and what I will learn.
